Use of Analytics Tools#
Umami#
We use Umami for privacy-friendly statistical analysis of the use of our website and for audience measurement.
According to Umami, the service works without cookies, without fingerprinting, and without collecting personal data. The analysis helps us better understand the use of our website and improve our content both technically and editorially. Based on our current setup, we use Umami Cloud with servers located in the EU.
Tools and Miscellaneous#
Social Share Functions#
Where sharing functions for social networks or messengers are offered on this website, they are currently provided as simple links and not as embedded social media plugins. Simply visiting our website does not automatically establish a connection to the respective social network.
Only when you actively click such a link do you leave our website, and the privacy policies of the respective provider then apply.
Use of Firebase / Cloud Firestore#
For certain functions of this website, we use Firebase / Cloud Firestore by Google. We use Cloud Firestore only to process technical information required for displaying view counts and “Like” information for individual articles.
We do not use Firebase for analytics, advertising, or marketing purposes and do not use any other Firebase services such as Analytics.
Simple status values are stored in the user’s browser via LocalStorage. These are used to keep track, within the browser being used, of whether a particular article has already been viewed or whether a “Like” has already been set for an article. This is intended in particular to prevent the same action from being counted unnecessarily multiple times within the same browser.
This information is stored locally in the browser and, according to our design, does not contain any real names or direct contact details. It can be deleted if the browser cache or stored website data is removed. Depending on the browser settings or when using private mode, this data may also be deleted automatically when the browser is closed.
In connection with the use of Firebase / Cloud Firestore, personal data may also be processed in third countries, in particular in the United States. Firebase is subject to Google’s privacy and contractual terms. Google provides, among other things, Data Processing and Security Terms as well as Standard Contractual Clauses for Firebase for this purpose.
Data Transfers to Third Countries, in Particular the United States#
Through the use of various technical and functional service providers, personal data may be transferred to third countries, in particular to the United States.
Where the GDPR applies, we ensure that such transfers are subject to appropriate safeguards in accordance with data protection requirements. Where applicable, these may include in particular Standard Contractual Clauses or other recognized mechanisms for international data transfers.

Storage Period#
We store personal data only for as long as this is necessary for the respective purposes or as required by statutory retention obligations.
- We store data from e-mail inquiries only for as long as necessary to process the inquiry and for any further correspondence, unless statutory retention obligations or legitimate interests require otherwise.
- In some cases, we do not have direct control over the exact storage periods of technical service providers. GitHub states in general that personal data is stored for as long as necessary to fulfill contractual obligations, comply with legal requirements, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements.
- Status values stored locally in the browser generally remain stored until they are deleted or automatically removed by your browser.
